Religious Leaders for Peace and Development
Held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 8 to 13 January 2012, the conference brought together Christian and Muslim leaders from West, Central, East and North Africa, the Indian Ocean and Denmark to examine how interreligious cooperation can advance peace and development.
The conference connected Africa’s diverse experiences of Christian-Muslim relations so that religious leaders could learn from one another and translate dialogue into joint action.

Continental Participation
More than 70 participants represented diverse Christian and Muslim experiences from West, Central, East and North Africa and the Indian Ocean.
Country Learning
Presentations examined experiences from Tanzania, Zanzibar, Sierra Leone, Madagascar, Liberia, Ethiopia, Egypt, Nigeria, Cameroon and Denmark.
African Union Engagement
Participants visited the African Union and explored how religious leaders, civil society and continental institutions could cooperate for peace and development.
Shared Experience, Shared Responsibility
- Sierra Leone and Liberia demonstrated how Christian and Muslim cooperation can contribute to ending conflict and rebuilding society.
- Tanzania, Zanzibar and Madagascar offered examples of cultural and political approaches that support coexistence.
- Egypt and Nigeria brought perspectives on religious tension, political change and violence.
- The conference concluded with an agreed communiqué and directions for continued interreligious action.
